Event Details
This great day of fun will take place at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center in Decatur, GA beginning at 8:30 am with a 5K Run/Walk, followed by the Juneteenth festival ending at 2:00 pm.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Word didn't reach the slaves of Galveston, Texas, until June 19, 1865, when an army of two-thousand Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived and informed them of their freedom. The slaves were so elated that they broke out in a celebration now known as "Juneteenth". Since then the observance of Juneteenth has spread across the United States and beyond with a range of activities, such as festivals, parades, barbeques, rodeos, etc.
Come join us as we continue in tradition with a celebration of cultural food, music, live entertainment, vendors and more, focusing on health, education, self- awareness and self-improvement. In addition, we will have informative workshops on Supporting Black Businesses, Home Ownership and Credit Repair.
We welcome all DeKalb county residents, as well as friends, family and associates of DeKalb county residents, to attend this historical event. Admission is FREE, however registration for the 5K is $25 for each team member (5 or more), $30 for individual and $10 for Tot Trot. For more information on sponsorship and vendor opportunities or to become a volunteer, please contact the branch office at (404) 241-8006 or naacpdek@comcast.net.
