Description
Fayette County, founded May 15, 1821, has long been home to my family. The original Fayette County Courthouse, constructed in 1825, is the oldest courthouse structure still standing in Georgia. This structure is a well-known landmark for all of Fayette County. An arson fire in 1983 badly damaged the third floor and clock tower. A restoration project was completed in May of 1984 and it was determined that the old Fayette County Courthouse was no longer adequate to serve our growing county. Since our building is located on the old courthouse square, to pay tribute to the old Fayette County landmark, I included it in the name of our restaurant Olde Courthouse Tavern. I worked closely with the City of Fayetteville's Mainstreet Committee to maintain the original architectural integrity and historical character of this building in our recent renovations.
